Dear Fellow Obamacrats:
I know my website must appear slightly different right now. This however is a very important election and I offer my enthusiastic support for Senator Barack Obama. Several weeks ago, Senator Barack Obama, along with US Senate candidate Mark Warner spoke in Martinsville, VA about an economy that is no longer robust and a war that has gone on for far too long. The Greater Laurel Obama Call Center has been placing calls to voters in Martinsville, VA for the past two weeks. He is talking to the same group of voters that we have been talking to from the Laurel Call Center. I personally had the opportunity to speak with a mom who was concerned about her son's deployment in Iraq. Our conversation must have lasted for about 10 minutes. She made it very clear during the course of our conversation that she was not in favor of an extended and permanent commitment in Iraq - she wants her son home now and believes that Barack is the best candidate to bring our troops home.
Conversely, I spoke with a young lady, in her mid-20s, who quite frankly expressed some concerns about some of the rumors she "heard" about Barack. She listed a range of rumors: that Barack doesn't say the pledge of allegiance ( I shared with her that as someone who has presided over the US Senate, Barack has routinely led the pledge of allegiance in the Senate chamber) and that Barack is Muslim and took the oath of office using the Koran ( I shared with her that Barack is a devout Christian who is respectful of people of all faith. I noted for her that Barack would be speaking with Rev. Rick Warren about his faith and invited her to watch). She assured me that she would keep an open mind but was very clear that many people in Martinsville, VA shared her concerns about the rumors.
As we continue to call Martinsville, VA, we need your help, more than ever, to encourage the mom who's son is deployed in Iraq and to address rumors with young voters who want to cast a meaningful vote for their future. Martinsville, VA is a very diverse area with a mix of Independent, Republican, and Democratic voters - it is precisely the kind of area that we need to win big to send Barack to the White House.
In the words of my colleague and fellow Obama volunteer Wendy Hamilton, "let's leave no voter behind."
