About Devin

Education: Harvard University and St. Louis University.Residence: Laurel, MDLeadership: Barack Obama for President - Devin was one of only a few District 21 community leaders to serve on the Maryland State Steering Committee to Elect Barack Obama for President. Working with over 100 fellow committee members, Devin helped create an early pathway for Barack Obama’s election.As a field coordinator, he helped establish the greater Laurel, Maryland for Obama Volunteer effort. Nearly 200 volunteers from Russett, Beltsville, Piney Orchard, Laurel, and College Park worked throughout the primary season to make phone calls and canvass in key swing states. Devin actively canvassed in Missouri and Virginia, two important swing states, to help Barack Obama win the Presidency.Russett Community Association - Devin served for several years as a representative for the Russett Homeowners Association. Russett is one of the largest planned urban development communities in the State of Maryland with over 4,000 housing units. Devin served on the budget committee and helped make decisions about the association’s $4 million dollar budget. As a representative and budget committee member, he fought against wasteful contracts, worked to bring more transparency to the governance process, and fought to lower monthly assessments. As a young leader in Russett, he helped lead community fights against gambling expansion and pan-handling. He also worked for better schools and improved police protection. He has identified gambling expansion as one of the biggest economic threats to Russett, Piney Orchard, and Laurel.Community He has participated in the Western District Police Council in Anne Arundel County and advised on fresh approaches to community policing and crime prevention. He served on the board of directors for Silver Spring Inter-faith Housing Coalition where he worked to prevent family homelessness. Devin established a Dads and Donuts leadership team at First Baptist School of Laurel to promote fatherhood, character education, and student academic performance. He currently serves as Community Service Co-chair for the Harvard Club of Maryland.Experience: He served as an underwriter for SAFECO Insurance companies. At SAFECO, he worked to evaluate worker’s compensation insurance policies for major corporations. As an undergraduate, Devin helped establish and manage a tele-communications start-up company for Southwestern Bell Corporation to advance facsimile related technologies. He worked as an intern at Monsanto Company, a biotechnology company located in St. Louis, MO. As a young executive with the General Board of Global Ministries (GBGM), an international mission and relief organization of the United Methodist Church, he led grant-making and advocacy efforts for both domestic and international programs. While employed with the American Red Cross, he served as senior associate on volunteer leadership issues. He worked to expand micro-enterprise and small business development in low-income communities as a consultant to the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE). As a graduate intern, he worked with the United Way of Massachusetts Bay’s to develop an innovative faith-based initiative focused on mentoring and youth academic achievement. The initiative serves as a national model for the Compassion Capital Fund. As a consultant for the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), he counseled property managers and tenant organizations in a national effort to organize low-income communities to close the achievement gap and the digital divide. He currently serves as director, community development programs where he works to promote green preservation and family economic stability in affordable housing communities.Policy Interests: Small-business development, fatherhood, workforce housing, campaign finance reform, foreclosure prevention, family economic stability, consumer financial protection, fighting gambling expansion.Occupation: Program and policy director for affordable housing and family economic securityFamily: Devin has been married for ten years to his wife Jenese. JOBSIt's issue number one for you. I am committed to focusing on small business development as a strategy for jump-starting and "greening" our economy. It's a proven strategy for economic growth.CUT SPENDINGIt's basic math. Working families understand that you can't spend more money than you earn - why can't elected officials understand this? I will fight for a state budget focused on family priorities - not on what's important to lobbyists. I will work to eliminate wasteful spending, non-essential programs, and abusive corporate tax loopholes. CONSUMER PROTECTIONI will work to eliminate the influence of predatory consumer financial products that ignited the current economic and foreclosure crisis.REFORM ANNAPOLISChange lodging per diem to reduce excessive spending.
EDUCATIONYou want to maintain a focus on education. I will work to make sure that Maryland remains competitive through innovation and smart reforms. I will work to enhance the role of charter schools in our state, increase the number of blue ribbon schools, support character education, and promote professional development for all teachers - public and private. I will also work to support our community colleges as a venue for promoting our green economy and training small business owners. CAMPAIGN FINANCE REFORMNew leadership means having an elected official that doesn't take contributions from lobbyists and special interests. The first bill I work on will limit the flow of campaign cash from one elected official to another elected official. RESPONSIBLE FATHERHOODI strongly believe that the well-being of children and families begin with responsible fathers. Research in fact shows that children with involved dads have much more positive outcomes related to academic achievement and self-esteem. I will promote public policies that help strengthen the role of dads in the lives of their children.
TRANSPORTATIONI support transit-oriented growth to help absorb the impact of BRAC. I will work to beautify Route 1 and Route 198 - both routes are essential to our quality of life in District 21.NO TO GAMBLING EXPANSIONI would never redline communities like Laurel. It's a community too important to our knowledge economy to be simply consigned to predatory gaming. There are signficant impacts on communities in greater Laurel (environment, traffic, crime, poverty). Our economic crisis is the direct result of lobbyists, elected leaders, and businesses gambling on exotic mortgages and related financial products.
